Behind the Scenes of a Fitness Photoshoot

If you’ve never taken part in a fitness photoshoot, the whole process can seem a bit daunting. I’m going to walk you through a real shoot from start to finish, so you understand exactly what happens—and why. After 21 years photographing athletes for Muscle & Fitness and FLEX Magazine, I know how to create an environment where my clients feel confident and get the best results possible.

Arrival and Consultation
It all begins when the client arrives at my 8,000 sq ft creative campus in Nottingham. First things first, I sit down with them for a quick chat. We discuss their goals, the look they want to achieve, any ideas they have, and how they plan to use the photos afterwards. This consultation sets the tone for the session. It makes sure we’re on the same page, whether the shoot is for a personal brand, competition prep, or social media content.

Preparation and Warming Up
Before we even start shooting, the client warms up physically. This helps muscles look fuller and reduces the risk of any strains during posing. Sometimes clients train right here in the on-site gym to get their blood pumping. I’ve seen the difference it makes—the vein detail really pops when the muscles are warm and ready.

Lighting Setup and Environment
Lighting is everything in fitness photography. In my studio, I handcraft each lighting setup based on the client’s physique and the mood we want to convey. From one main softbox casting strong shadows to highlight muscle depth, to multiple lights that evenly illuminate every detail, I direct the entire process. This means the client doesn’t have to guess where to look or how the light is affecting them. They can focus on performing their best.

Directing Poses and Creating Energy
One thing I always emphasise is that I never expect clients to come in knowing every pose. With my experience shooting seven Mr Olympia and seven Arnold Classic competitions, I guide clients through every move, refining angles and adjusting flexes constantly. We work together on timing too—shooting while the client’s muscles are pumped but still fresh enough for sharp definition.
The energy in the room matters. Whether the client is a seasoned pro or a first-timer, I keep things upbeat and encouraging, helping them relax and enjoy the session. I’ve had many nervous clients tell me afterwards they felt like they were on a film set rather than a photoshoot.

Outfit Changes and Variety
Clients typically bring multiple outfits and accessories, and we organise quick changes so we can get a variety of shots in one session. From gym gear to competition trunks, each look needs a separate lighting and pose approach. Preparing all these details in advance during consultation and rehearsal makes the shoot flow smoothly without wasting any time under the lights.

Final Frames and Reviewing Shots
Throughout the session, I review the shots with the client on a monitor. This allows them to see what works and what doesn’t. The feedback loop helps us tweak poses and lighting so we nail the final frames. By the end, clients have a diverse collection of professional content that can last them for months across social media, promotional materials, or competition submissions.

Why Understanding the Process Matters for PTs and Coaches
If you’re a personal trainer or coach, understanding how much goes into creating compelling fitness content changes how you plan sessions and support clients. A shoot isn’t just ‘go flex and smile’. It’s a carefully choreographed production involving preparation, timing, lighting, and expert direction. With over 2,000 athletes photographed, I’ve learned that those who prepare and collaborate get the most out of their investment.
