How to Prepare for Your First Fitness Photoshoot

Preparing for your first fitness photoshoot requires more than just showing up. You need to consider what to bring, how to dress, your skin prep, the best way to pump up your muscles, and what to expect on the day. With 21 years of experience shooting fitness athletes, including Muscle & Fitness covers and Mr Olympia contests, I'm here to share practical advice that makes the whole process smoother and more effective.

What to Bring to Your Fitness Photoshoot
Bringing the right items helps everything run smoothly. You'll want multiple outfits if your shoot allows it, including workout gear, fitted casual wear, or physique-revealing clothes. A small grooming kit is essential—think hairbrush, deodorant, lip balm, and baby powder (to reduce shine). A water bottle and a healthy snack are smart to keep energy levels steady.

When I shot British athlete Amy Smith for FLEX Magazine, she brought three different outfits and a small makeup kit, which sped up the shoot and gave us versatility in the shots.
What to Wear for Your Fitness Photoshoot
Your clothing should suit the style of shoot and show your physique clearly. I recommend tight-fitting, plain colours that contrast well with the background. Avoid busy patterns or logos that distract. For men, trunks or shorts that sit mid-thigh work well, while women often choose high-cut briefs or sports bras.

During a session with pro athlete James Carter, we found solid navy trunks offered the best balance between coverage and profile clarity, which helps the lighting highlight his muscle shape perfectly.
Tanning and Skin Preparation
Tan plays a vital role in emphasising muscle definition. If you're using spray tan or self-tan, arrange it 24 to 48 hours before your shoot. This timing allows the colour to settle naturally without patchiness. Avoid moisturising too close to the shoot because it can cause shine that washes out details.

A quick tip: Exfoliate your skin a day before tanning to create an even surface. When I shot the 2023 Arnold Classic, 85% of the athletes used professional spray tans, which gave their muscles much sharper definition in the final images.
How to Pump Up Before the Shoot
Pumping the muscles increases vascularity and makes your physique pop. Ideally, you want to do light resistance exercises about 30 minutes before the shoot begins. Avoid going all out though — the goal is not to fatigue but to increase blood flow.

For many shoots in my Nottingham studio, I have a small gym on site. This allows athletes to pump up between shots quickly. For example, on a recent shoot with personal trainer Emma Green, we scheduled a quick set of light dumbbell curls and bodyweight squats to bring up muscle fullness without causing fatigue.

What to Expect on Your Photoshoot Day
Your fitness photoshoot day will be focused but relaxed if you're prepared. Expect to spend several hours getting the perfect shots, with breaks to refuel and rehydrate. Lighting setup and direction from the photographer can feel technical but trust the process—every angle and light adjustment highlights your physique's best features.

When I photographed Mr Olympia competitors, the key was patience and communication. I guide my athletes throughout, showing them poses that suit their body type and helping them relax. Don't worry if it takes time — quality shots are worth the extra effort.

Final Thoughts on Preparation
Remember, preparation reduces stress and boosts results. Having the right clothing and items, a good tan, a proper pump-up and understanding what will happen on the day all contribute to a successful shoot. If you want detailed preparation advice, check out my photoshoot prep guide for more tips.
