Personal Trainer Photos: How to Build a Content Bank That Books Clients

Ask where to get professional gym photos for a PT website and you will get twenty answers, most of them from people selling you a headshot. Here is the honest version: a personal trainer does not need a photoshoot. A personal trainer needs a content bank, and a photoshoot is just how you fill it.

The difference matters. A photoshoot gives you nice pictures. A content bank gives you assets mapped to the places your business actually lives: your website, your Google Business Profile, your Instagram grid, your Reels covers, your client proposals and your ads. Plan the session around those destinations and one afternoon of shooting works for months.

The four shot types every PT needs

1. Headshots and portraits. For your website, Google profile, directories and press. Clean, confident, recent. If your profile photo is five years and two haircuts old, this is where trust quietly leaks away.

2. Training in action. You coaching a client, correcting form, running a session. These are the most commercially valuable frames a PT can own because they show the product: what it is like to be trained by you.

3. Physique work. Proof of credibility. It does not need to be a stage-condition shoot, it needs to show that you live what you coach. Directed properly, this is one setup within the session, not the whole session.

4. Lifestyle and behind the scenes. The human material: prepping the studio, the between-set laugh, the shaker and notebook. This is what performs on social, because people buy the person before the programme.

Add vertical video to each of those and the bank doubles in value: talking-to-camera clips, training b-roll and Reels covers come from the same setups when the session is planned for both stills and video from the start.

How much should a PT photoshoot cost?

In the UK, budget sessions run from about £70 to £180 for a short slot with a handful of images. Established specialist fitness photographers charge from around £400 to £700 for a directed studio session of two hours or more with a full edited gallery. Commercial and brand work runs higher.

The number that matters more is cost per month of use. A £500 session producing a six-month bank of website, social and proposal assets costs less than most PTs spend on a single month of ads, and it improves the performance of every ad you run afterwards. When comparing quotes, check the edited image count, whether posing and shot direction are included, whether video clips are available in the same session, and how fast the gallery is delivered.

How often should you refresh?

Most working PTs and coaches refresh professionally every 8 to 12 weeks. Not because the old images stop being good, but because feeds punish repetition and your offers change: new programme, new season, new transformation stories to tell. Coaches posting daily cycle through a bank faster and tend to move to a monthly rhythm.

That cadence is exactly what fitness content days and the content retainers are built around: a scheduled session producing 20 edited images plus video every month or quarter, so the bank refills before it runs dry.

Planning the session so it books clients

Before the shoot, write down the next three things you will sell: the January transformation programme, the online coaching tier, the small group sessions. Then make sure the shot list covers each one. Selling online coaching needs laptop-and-phone frames. Selling group training needs multiple-client energy. Selling transformations needs the coaching relationship in frame.

Think in destinations while you shoot: horizontal frames for website banners, vertical for Stories and Reels, square-safe crops for the grid, and at least one set with clean space for text overlay, because that frame becomes your ad creative and your lead magnet cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photos does a personal trainer actually need?

Four types: professional headshots for profiles and press, training-in-action shots that demonstrate coaching, physique shots that prove credibility, and lifestyle or behind-the-scenes images for social content. Add vertical video clips for Reels covers and Stories, and one session covers your website, Google Business Profile, social media and client proposals for months.

How much does a PT photoshoot cost in the UK?

Budget sessions start around £70 to £180 for a short slot with a few images. Established specialist fitness photographers charge from roughly £400 to £700 for a directed two-hour-plus studio session with a full edited gallery. Compare what is included: image count, posing direction, video clips and delivery speed vary widely between photographers.

How often should a PT refresh their photos?

Every 8 to 12 weeks is the working rhythm for most coaches, moving to monthly if you post daily. Feeds punish repetition, offers change seasonally, and fresh imagery keeps ads and profiles performing. Retainer options exist for exactly this reason.

Where can I get professional gym photos for my PT website?

Look for a specialist fitness photographer rather than a general portrait studio: gym lighting, physique direction and training action are specific skills. Check their gallery shows real coaching and training work, ask whether sessions are directed, and confirm you get both horizontal frames for your website and vertical assets for social.
