What Is a Fitness Photoshoot and Is It Right for You

What Is a Fitness Photoshoot and Is It Right for You

A fitness photoshoot is a professional photography session designed to capture your physique, strength, or athletic identity at its best. It covers everything from gym-based physique work and bodybuilding shots to action sequences, posing, and lifestyle content. Whether you are a competitive athlete, a personal trainer building a brand, or someone who has worked hard for a result worth documenting, a fitness photoshoot gives that effort a visual record it deserves.

The Woman in These Photos

Every image in this post is of Micha Kelly. Micha stepped away from the fitness scene for a short while to start a family. By the time she booked her shoot with me, she was back in incredible shape, and she wanted a set of photos that showed it.

Her shoot was about more than her own milestone. Micha's goal now is to train women over 30: women getting back into training after having a child, and anyone who needs proof that age does not decide what their body can do. These photos show exactly what she is talking about.

If that sounds like you, follow her on Instagram at @michakelly.

Who Books a Fitness Photoshoot

After 18 years shooting athletes, I can tell you that the people who walk through my studio door are far more varied than most people assume. Yes, competition athletes preparing for PCA, UKBFF and NABBA seasons book with me. So do personal trainers who need professional content for their websites and social media. Fitness influencers, content creators, supplement brand ambassadors, and everyday people who have achieved a shape they are proud of, all of them have a reason to be in front of a lens.

If you train consistently, care about the result, and want images that reflect the work you put in, a fitness photoshoot is for you. You do not need to be a professional athlete or have a six-figure following. You just need a goal and the drive to have shown up for it.

What Happens on the Day

The studio is completely private. No other clients, no gym members walking through, no distractions. Every session is booked exclusively for you, so from the moment you arrive at Colwick Quays Business Park in Nottingham, the space is yours.

You arrive, get your bearings, and we talk through the look you want before we shoot a single frame. I direct everything. Angles, lighting position, posing, the lot. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want, though if you have reference images or ideas that is always useful. My job is to read your physique and work with it, not against it.

The studio has a full training floor, wall-to-wall mirrors, private changing facilities, and professional lighting on stands, booms, and rig systems that I set specifically for each shot. The setup changes as we work through the session. What lights your back double bicep is not the same setup that works for a seated dumbbell shot, and I adjust accordingly.

Outfit changes are unlimited across every package. Most clients bring three to five looks. Changing takes a few minutes and gives the gallery real variety without eating into shooting time.

When we are done, you leave with more than you came in with. Your online gallery arrives within 48 hours of the shoot so you can choose your favourites. Edited finals follow within four weeks of your selection, or within seven working days with express delivery.

Fitness Photoshoot Ideas That Actually Work in the Studio

One of the most common questions I get is what to actually shoot. People arrive with a vague idea of "gym shots" and leave wondering why they did not plan more. Here are the setups that work consistently well and produce the images people actually use.

Classic Physique Shots

Front, side, and rear poses against a clean backdrop. These are the foundation. Whether you are prepping for competition, building a modelling portfolio, or just want to see what your physique looks like properly lit, you need at least a handful of these. The key is posing. Good posing can add centimetres of visual width to your back and tighten a waist on camera. I recommend reading the fitness posing guide before your shoot so you arrive with a working knowledge of the basics.

Action and Movement Shots

Lifting, pulling, pressing, the studio has a full training floor so we can use real equipment for real-looking shots. These work especially well for personal trainers and coaches who need content that communicates what they do, not just what they look like. Racking a barbell, mid-rep on a cable row, chalking up before a deadlift: these are the images that read as authentic because they are.

Lifestyle and Brand Content

For coaches and creators, pure physique shots are only part of the story. Lifestyle content, sitting with a phone, reviewing a programme, talking to camera, gives followers and potential clients a sense of who you are beyond your back double bicep. The studio supports this kind of shooting across multiple spaces, including the kitchen studio for nutrition and lifestyle content.

Dramatic Low-Key Lighting

One of the most requested looks I shoot is high-contrast, moody lighting that really carves out muscle definition. This is not something you replicate with a phone and a window. It takes controlled studio lighting positioned precisely for your physique. The results are striking and they tend to be the images clients come back to years later. Fitness Photoshoot Packages and What They Include

Every package includes full direction, use of the private studio, and unlimited outfit changes. The difference between them is session length and the number of edited images you receive.

  • The Session (£500) gives you 1.5 hours and 10 edited images. A sharp, focused shoot that delivers a strong core set of images without overcomplicating the day.
  • The Statement (£675) runs for 2 hours and delivers 20 edited images plus a behind-the-scenes video. Most gym shoots sit comfortably in this range.
  • The Launch (£1,240) is a 3-hour session with 40 edited images, black and white conversions, a premium video, and express delivery included.
  • The Campaign (£1,600) is a 4-hour session with 65 edited images, a launch video, and two reels. This also includes the only optional Zoom consultation in the packages, so we can plan the session in more detail beforehand.

If you want to bring someone along to watch, whether that is a coach, a partner, or a friend, they are welcome at no cost. If they want to appear in the shoot themselves, the Partner Package covers both of you.

What to Wear to a Fitness Photoshoot

Clothing choices have a bigger impact on the final images than most people realise before they arrive. As a general principle, fitted beats baggy, plain beats busy, and darker tones tend to read cleaner on camera. Avoid thick logos and bold patterns, they pull attention away from your physique rather than complementing it.

For men, fitted shorts or compression bottoms in neutral tones work consistently well. For women, sports sets, gym shorts, or fitted separates in solid colours give you versatility across multiple looks. Bring options and we will work through them during the session.

For a full breakdown of what to bring and what to avoid, the what to wear to a fitness photoshoot guide covers it in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a fitness photoshoot take?

Session lengths depend on the package you choose. The Session runs for 1.5 hours, The Statement for 2 hours, The Launch for 3 hours, and The Campaign for 4 hours. Most gym shoots run comfortably within 1.5 to 2 hours, which gives you enough time to work through multiple outfits and setups without the day feeling rushed.

Do I need experience in front of the camera?

No. Most of my clients have never done a professional shoot before. I direct everything, from how to stand to where to look to how to breathe during a pose. If you can show up and take direction, we will get great images. Reading the posing guide beforehand helps, but it is not a requirement.

Can I bring someone with me to the shoot?

Yes. A coach, partner, or friend is welcome to come along and watch at no cost. If they want to appear in the shoot as well, the Partner Package covers both of you and adds £300 to The Session or The Statement.

How many photos will I receive?

That depends on your package. The Session delivers 10 edited images, The Statement delivers 20, The Launch delivers 40, and The Campaign delivers 65. After the shoot, your online gallery arrives within 48 hours and you choose your favourites from there.

What should I do to prepare for a fitness photoshoot?

Focus on the things you can control: what you wear, what you bring, and arriving on time. Christopher does not give diet, water, or training advice for a shoot, so follow your coach's plan if you have one. For everything else, including grooming, tanning, and what to pack, download the free photoshoot prep guide after booking or visit the how to prepare page.

If you are ready to book or want to find out which package suits you best, get in touch through the contact page and we will take it from there.
