Why Professional Headshots Matter for Personal Trainers

A conversation from a few weeks ago has stuck with me. The founder of a UK company that trains and develops personal trainers told me about a pattern they keep seeing in public gyms: trainers who put a professional headshot on the staff board attract up to ten times as many enquiries as the trainers pictured next to them. Same gym floor, same prices, same qualifications. The photo is the difference.
Ten times sounds dramatic until you think about how people actually choose a trainer. Nobody reads the qualification list first. They look at the faces, decide who they trust, and then find reasons to justify it. Princeton researchers found that we judge how trustworthy a face is in about one tenth of a second. By the time a member has finished scanning the staff board, the shortlist is already made.
The wider data points the same way. LinkedIn's own figures show profiles with a photo receive 21 times more views, 9 times more connection requests and up to 36 times more messages than profiles without one. Different platform, same mechanism: the photo is the first filter, and most people never get past it.
What a professional gym headshot actually looks like
These frames are from a recent session with Rut Rehnström at the studio. Three images from one session, each doing a different job.
The front-on frame above is the anchor shot: direct, composed, and unmistakably someone who belongs on a gym floor. That is the one for the staff board and the website, because it answers the only question a potential client is really asking: does this person look like they can get me results?
The side angle brings polish for social profiles and press. And the relaxed frame at the top of this post, sat by the dumbbell rack mid-smile, is the approachable one. Capable only converts when it is paired with warmth; people hire the trainer they can imagine turning up to see at 6am.
None of this happens with a phone selfie or a cropped holiday photo. It comes from proper lighting, a real training environment and direction in front of the camera, which is exactly what a directed PT session is for.
Where the headshot earns its keep
One set of headshots covers the staff board, your Google Business Profile, your Instagram profile and grid, your website and every directory listing you appear on. If you work a gym floor, the staff board alone justifies the session: it is the highest-intent free advertising space you will ever have, seen daily by people who have already paid to be in the building.
Headshots are only one of the shot types a working PT needs, but they are the non-negotiable one. If your current photo is not working as hard as you do, get in touch and we will fix it in a single session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do professional headshots really get personal trainers more clients?
The pattern reported by a UK PT education business is that trainers with professional headshots on public gym staff boards attract up to ten times as many enquiries as equally qualified colleagues. It matches the wider data: LinkedIn profiles with a photo receive 21 times more views and up to 36 times more messages, and research shows people judge trustworthiness from a face in around a tenth of a second.
Where should a personal trainer use a professional headshot?
Everywhere a potential client makes a decision: the gym staff board, Google Business Profile, Instagram profile and grid, your website, and directory listings. One directed session in a real gym environment covers all of them.
What makes a good personal trainer headshot?
A real training environment rather than a plain office backdrop, proper lighting, and direction in front of the camera. You want at least two looks from a session: a direct, composed frame that signals capability for the staff board and website, and a relaxed, approachable frame for social profiles. Avoid gym selfies and cropped personal photos.
