Women's Fitness Photoshoot Ideas for PTs and Coaches

Women's Fitness Photoshoot Ideas for PTs and Coaches

The best women's fitness photoshoot ideas are not a list of poses. They are a set of image slots you need to fill: a hero image for your website, a headshot for press and directories, action shots for your social grid, and vertical crops for stories. Plan around those slots and every frame has a purpose. Miss them and you end up with 40 near-identical images you can not actually use.

I photographed London-based personal trainer Jade Maxwell at the studio recently, and her shoot is a good example of how this works in practice. One client, one day, one set of images that had to cover her website, her social media, her gym profile, and press enquiries. This post walks through exactly how we approached it and what each type of image is actually for.

Why Most PT Shoots Produce Images You Cannot Use

I have photographed over 2,000 athletes across 18 years in fitness photography. The most common mistake I see PTs make is booking a shoot and thinking in terms of poses rather than placements. They want nice gym pictures. They leave with 40 frames from similar angles in similar light, and when they sit down to build their website they realise they have nothing for the about page, nothing portrait-cropped for LinkedIn, nothing that works as a headshot for a magazine feature.

The fix is simple. Before you pick up a camera, list every slot you need to fill. Jade's list looked something like this:

  • A wide hero image for the homepage banner
  • A square or portrait image for the about section
  • A clean headshot for her gym profile and press kit
  • Three to five action shots for her Instagram grid
  • Vertical crops (9:16) for stories and reels thumbnails
  • A looser lifestyle image for the human side of her brand

That list shapes the entire shoot. You know when you have enough. You know when you are missing something. You stop shooting until the card is full and start shooting until the brief is covered.

Gym Action Shots and What They Are Actually For

Action shots are the core of any PT's content library. They show you working, which is the point. But there is a difference between a gym photo and a usable brand image, and it comes down to framing, light, and intention.

With Jade, we shot the training content first. This is something I always do with clients who are newer to the camera. The gym environment is familiar, the movements are automatic, and within ten minutes the self-consciousness drops. By the time we moved to headshots later in the session, she was relaxed and her expressions were real rather than held.

How to Frame Action Shots for Different Platforms

A horizontal image looks great on a website banner. It does almost nothing on Instagram Stories or as a Reel thumbnail. I shoot vertical deliberately during the gym section, not as a crop-down from a wider frame. A 9:16 frame composed at the time gives you a clean subject with space above and below. Cropping it in post almost always cuts something important off.

For Jade's grid we shot a mixture: a wide environmental frame showing her in the full gym context, a tighter mid-shot on the barbell work, and a close detail frame. Three different distances, three different uses, all from the same location in the same hour.

Lighting for Action in a Gym Setting

Gym lighting varies enormously and most of it is not flattering for photography. Overhead fluorescents create shadows under the eyes and jaw. I bring portable studio heads and set them to work with the environment, not against it. The goal is clean, directional light that shows muscle shape without making the image look like a formal studio shot. The campus studio in Nottingham has a full gym set built specifically for this, which means I can control every variable, and it is why nearly every shoot happens there. If a brief genuinely calls for your own gym, I can travel with the lighting for an additional cost, but that is the exception rather than the rule.

Professional Headshots for Fitness Professionals

A headshot is not a gym shot with a smile. It requires different lighting, a different background approach, and a different mindset from the subject. Most fitness professionals underestimate how much their headshot does for them professionally. It goes on their gym's website, their personal training bio, press features, podcast guest profiles, and LinkedIn. It needs to do a specific job: look professional and approachable at the same time.

With Jade, we took the headshots after the training content was done. By that point she had been in front of the camera for an hour, she was warm, she had stopped thinking about what to do with her hands, and she was just herself. The difference in expression between someone who walks in cold for a headshot and someone who has spent an hour shooting beforehand is visible in every single frame. I have seen it consistently across years of working with clients at every level, from amateur competitors to athletes I have shot for Muscle and Fitness and FLEX Magazine.

What Makes a Good Fitness Headshot

  • Clean background that does not compete with the subject
  • Professional but branded: colour choices and clothing should match the rest of the shoot
  • Shot both horizontal and vertical so it works on every platform
  • Expression that is genuine, not held. A held smile reads as a held smile
  • Multiple options: a more formal version and a warmer, looser version give you flexibility

If you are unsure what to wear for this section of the shoot, the guidance in our fitness photoshoot clothing guide covers exactly what works and what to avoid.

Branding Portraits and the Images In Between

There is a category of image that sits between a headshot and an action shot, and it is often the most useful content a PT takes away from a shoot. I call them branding portraits. They show you as a professional without being stiff. Jade talking to camera in her training gear, standing confidently, hands in a natural position. Used well, these images carry the weight of your about page, your lead magnet graphics, your podcast artwork, your welcome email.

The key to a good branding portrait is that the subject looks like they are in the middle of something rather than posing for a picture. Getting there is my job, not Jade's. I direct every element: chin forward and slightly down, shoulders pulled back, weight shifted, hands placed. She did not need to memorise a posing guide. I talk people through every frame. Our posing guide for fitness photoshoots gives you a sense of what we cover, but in practice it is a live conversation throughout the shoot.

How to Structure a Full PT Photoshoot Day

Based on what works across hundreds of PT and coach shoots, here is a practical sequence:

  1. Start with action and training shots. Use a familiar movement pattern. This settles nerves and gets you out of your head.
  2. Move to branding portraits mid-session. You are warmed up but not tired. Energy is good.
  3. Finish with headshots. Counter-intuitive but correct. You are relaxed, the expression is real, and the formality of the headshot frame does not feel as loaded.
  4. Shoot vertical deliberately throughout. Do not rely on cropping it in post.
  5. Review the slot list before you wrap. Make sure every placement is covered before you leave the set.

If You Are Not in Nottingham

Jade is London-based and made the trip to Nottingham for the day, which is how most of my clients work. If you are based further south or in a different city, the process is the same and the results are the same. Take a look at the London fitness photography page for how a session works from London, or check the pricing page to understand what a full shoot package looks like before you get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of images should a personal trainer get from a photoshoot?

A PT needs at minimum: a clean professional headshot, two or three gym action shots at different distances, at least one branding portrait for the about page, and vertical-framed images for social stories. Plan around those slots before you shoot and you will leave with a usable library rather than a large collection of similar frames.

Do I need to know how to pose for a fitness photoshoot?

No. Directing you is my job. I guide every element of every frame, including your chin position, shoulder angle, hand placement, and where to put your weight. Clients who come in expecting to need a posing plan are usually relieved to find out they do not. What helps is being physically prepared and rested on the day.

How long does a typical PT or coach photoshoot take?

A well-planned shoot covering gym action, branding portraits, and headshots typically runs between three and five hours. That accounts for outfit changes, the time it takes to settle in front of the camera, and shooting multiple vertical and horizontal framings of each setup. Rushing this produces fewer usable images, not more.

Can I use my gym for the shoot or do I need a studio?

The studio, almost always. It gives you full lighting control, a private space with no members walking through the frame, and a clean aesthetic that carries across your whole set of images. Your own gym gives you an environment your audience already associates with you, but the lighting, space and background are rarely built for photography. The 8,000 sq ft campus in Nottingham includes a full gym studio built for exactly this. Shooting at your own gym is possible as a location shoot for an additional travel cost, and if that is what the brief needs I bring the equipment to make it work properly.

What is the difference between a fitness headshot and a regular professional headshot?

The main difference is context and clothing. A fitness professional headshot should still be clean and professional, but it sits within a broader visual identity that includes your training environment and your brand colours. It does not need to look like a corporate LinkedIn photo. It needs to look like you, at your professional best, in the world your clients are hiring you to be an expert in.

If you are a PT or coach thinking about booking a shoot, the first step is understanding what you actually need from it. View the shoot packages and pricing to see what is included, or get in touch directly and we can talk through exactly what your shoot needs to cover before anything is booked.
